Lower Abdominal Fat

The two surface muscles that make up that area are, the bottom of your rectus abdominis, and your external oblique. The truth is there’s more connective tissue than muscle in that area. That partially explains why its hard to loose your “love handles” and lower abdominal fat, there’s not much muscle in the area to give it shape.

Unless you’ve played sports.

The external oblique works hard to stabilize our spine in situations where we laterally flex (moving our trunk side to side) and we rotate about our hips (rotating our trunk).

An exercise that forces us to; stabilize our spine from impact, resist against rotation and keep our posture upright is… sprinting. That is why its difficult for many of us to loose those love handles and build that coveted V-shape in our stomachs. When was the last time you went all out on a sprint? when was the last time you went 75% on a sprint? most traditional gyms don’t really have the space for it so, it really isn’t your fault, but that’s one of the biggest contributors to an athletes physique. They sprint, sometimes at 100% in an attempt to get faster or increase the duration in which they can run at maximum capacity. In both situations, the obliques are being worked and built tremendously.

Barbell Squats and Lunges are also two great ways to work those external obliques, under load. There is a good amount of core “bracing” required to do the movements well and without injury.

Theres a ton of oblique exercises you can do, most of them are on my instagram page, but very few will work those obliques in to tality like the exercises mentioned above.

So in short if you want to get rid of that lower belly fat, play sports!! Play football, basketball, tennis, soccer or, if youre a loner, do interval sprints! You need to get running in order to build those obliques, Have Fun!
