The phrase “ashwagandha” translates to ” the smell of a horse” which indicates hints about its unique smell, but alludes to its personal legend of making man as strong as a horse. In many parts of Northern Africa, Ashwagandha was used to treat fevers and most inflammatory conditions. In India its reported native land its primarily used as a general body strengthening tonic that helps the immune system adjust for the change in seasons. This herb is part a particular group of Ayurvedic plants called adaptogens, which balance, restore, and protect the body.
Many modern studies have been conducted on Ashwagandha to test its potent healing capabilities. Ashwagandha greatly improves latent thyroid function as well as calms an overactive thyroid, by balancing hormone production. This is due to the ability to lower lipid peroxidation, which is when free radicals steal electrons from the lipids that make up cell membranes. This process destroys the cells. Ashwagandha also contains Withanolides which are steroids that have various functions in the body. Withanolide-A in particular decreases free radicals in the brain supplying necessary oxygen. Withanolide-A was also found to increase Glutathione production, a chemical that is key in fighting alzheimer’s and parkinson’s diseases. This super herb also combats Adrenal fatigue by improving Cortisol levels and insulin sensitivity. Ashwagandha has notable amounts of Choline which reduces neural tube and kidney defects. Choline is a key nutrient in the development of the neurons of fetuses, so choline is definitely necessary for maintaining homeostasis for pregnant women and their children. Because of its abundant source of free radicals Ashwagandha has been shown to effectively treat, Lung, Throat, Breast and Prostate Cancers which are among the leading cancers in the U.S. It also increases red blood cell count which helps with muscular endurance and brain activity making it a great herb for anyone to take !!
